Nobody plans to fall behind on their books. A bookkeeper leaves, a busy season eats every evening, or the bank feed stops syncing. Before long there’s a year-end that never closed, GST/HST returns that weren’t filed and a T2 you’ve been putting off. Then a CRA letter arrives and it all needs fixing at once.
I’m Wajahat Ajmal, CPA, FCCA, based in Etobicoke and the founder of T-Ledgers. Catch-up work is one of the things we do most. The fix is the same every time: rebuild the books in order, reconcile everything to the bank, file what’s overdue, and talk to the CRA before the CRA talks to you. Our team does the rebuild, a CPA reviews every year before anything is filed, and you know the price before we start.
Catch-up bookkeeping is the work of bringing a business’s financial records up to date after a period where little or nothing was recorded. We go back to the last reliable point, usually your last filed return or reconciled bank statement, and rebuild every period from there to today.
The result is a complete set of books for each fiscal year: every account reconciled to its statements, income and expenses coded correctly, GST/HST separated out and year-end adjustments posted. That’s what your overdue returns get filed from, and what a bank or the CRA will want to see.
If you’d like to understand the mechanics first, our step-by-step guide to catch-up bookkeeping in Canada walks through it. This page explains how we do it for you, what it costs and what happens with the CRA.
If two or more of these sound familiar, it’s time:
There’s no limit on how far behind you can be, and no point at which it’s too late to catch up. All we need to start is your bank and credit card statements. What changes with time is the shape of the project.
The most common situation: a few months missing and maybe a late GST/HST quarter. We bring the books current, file the overdue return and move you onto a monthly plan.
Usually one or two years with no year-end, unfiled T2s and several missed GST/HST periods. We rebuild each year in order from the last filed return and file the most exposed years first.
Bigger, but still a normal project for us. The CRA may already have sent a demand to file or assessed you on its own estimate. We plan the filings around penalties and deadlines and, where it fits, prepare a Voluntary Disclosures Program application before anything is filed. It’s still one fixed price, worked out per year, so you see the full cost up front.
Missing receipts are normal in a catch-up project, and they don’t stop the work. Bank and credit card statements are the backbone of the rebuild, and most banks can provide past statements even if you’ve lost access to old ones. Payment processors such as Stripe, Square, PayPal and Shopify keep their own reports, which we use to split gross sales from fees. Anything large we can’t support goes on a short list for you, rather than being quietly claimed.
Going forward, keep in mind that the CRA generally requires you to keep books, records and supporting documents for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to.
The two terms get used interchangeably, but they’re different jobs, and many businesses need both.

| Catch-up bookkeeping | Cleanup bookkeeping | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Periods with nothing recorded | Books exist, but they’re wrong or unreliable |
| Typical work | Rebuilding transactions from statements, reconciling, closing each year | Removing duplicates, fixing miscoded entries, reconciling accounts that never tied, correcting opening balances |
| Usual trigger | Fell behind, overdue returns, CRA letter | DIY books, a previous bookkeeper’s file, a failed reconciliation at year-end |
If your previous bookkeeper’s work needs fixing before we can build on it, we include the cleanup in the same fixed quote. Our case study on rescuing a client from a previous accountant shows what that looks like in practice, and our post on switching accountants explains what to ask for when you leave.
Every catch-up project is scoped to your situation, but the core work is the same.
Before you pay anything, we check what’s been filed and what’s missing. With your authorization in CRA My Business Account, we can see exactly which GST/HST, T2 and payroll filings the CRA is waiting for. You then get a written scope and a fixed price.
We work forward from your last reliable balance, one month at a time, so each period’s closing balance becomes the next one’s verified opening balance. Transactions are coded to a chart of accounts that maps to the CRA’s GIFI codes, so each year rolls straight into its return.
Every bank, credit card, loan and payment processor account is reconciled to its statements for every month, with loan payments split between principal and interest. Our guide What is a bank reconciliation? explains why this matters.
Where there’s an existing file, we remove duplicates, clear suspense accounts, reclassify personal spending and capital purchases, and correct opening balances to the last filed return.
We rebuild the GST/HST you collected and the input tax credits you can claim for every period, prepare each overdue return from the reconciled numbers, and file them. Where a past return was filed on estimates, we check whether it needs adjusting. Overdue GST/HST filing is included in your catch-up price.
For each year we post capital assets and capital cost allowance, prepaids, accruals and payroll entries, and rebuild the shareholder loan account, because unrecorded money between you and your corporation can become personal income.
You get a profit and loss statement and balance sheet for each caught-up year, with a short summary of missed deductions, credits recovered and what you’re likely to owe.
Once a year’s books are done, we can prepare and file the income tax return that depends on them: your corporation’s T2 corporate tax return or, for sole proprietors, your personal T1 return with the T2125 business statement. The corporation’s T2 is included in the per-year catch-up price; a personal T1 is quoted separately and added to the same fixed proposal so you see the full cost before you sign. Every return is reviewed by a CPA before it’s filed.
As your authorized representative, we respond to CRA letters, request extensions where reasonable, and talk to the CRA for you. One of our clients put it simply: he was a few years behind, and we “did all the communicating with the CRA” so he didn’t have to. See how that worked in our case study on catching up years of unfiled taxes.
Facing a CRA assessment you don’t think you owe? See how we cleared a contractor’s $45,000 CRA bill caused by mixed-up T4As →
We flag these on the first call and price them before we start:
To start, all we need is your bank and credit card statements; the rest helps us fill in detail. Not sure what to gather? Our corporate year-end checklist covers most of it.
Catch-up typically takes 2 to 4 weeks for up to a year behind, once we have your bank and credit card statements. Multi-year projects take longer. You get a timeline with your quote, planned around any CRA deadline.
Most owners who are behind are really worried about one thing: the CRA. Here’s what actually happens, and what you can do about it.
Law: Income Tax Act s.150(1) (filing returns); Income Tax Act s.162(1) (failure to file penalty); Income Tax Act s.220(3.1) (waiver of penalty or interest); Excise Tax Act s.238(1) (GST/HST returns).
← Swipe to compare →
| Return | Late-filing penalty (first time) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| T2 corporate return | 5% of unpaid tax, plus 1% for each full month late, up to 12 months | Repeat late filers with a demand to file: 10% plus 2% a month, up to 20 months |
| T1 personal return | 5% of the balance owing, plus 1% for each full month late, up to 12 months | Same repeat-filer rule |
| GST/HST return | 1% of the amount owing, plus 25% of that 1% for each full month late, up to 12 months | Interest also applies |
| Payroll remittances | 3% to 10% of the late amount, depending on how late | Up to 20% for repeat failures made knowingly or through gross negligence |
Interest at the CRA’s prescribed rate compounds daily from the day a balance was due. If no tax is owing, these penalties don’t apply, but refunds and credits are held until you file. Our guides on avoiding CRA interest and penalties and the consequences of not filing your taxes go into more detail.
If returns stay unfiled, the CRA can send a formal demand to file and assess you on its own estimate. Those estimates rarely favour you, because the CRA doesn’t know your expenses. Accurate returns from rebuilt books replace the estimate with the real number.
GST/HST you collected belongs to the CRA, so an unfiled return often means a real balance owing. The good news: input tax credits for GST/HST you paid on business expenses can generally be claimed for up to four years after the due date of the return they relate to, so a catch-up can recover money as well as stop penalties. Our posts on GST/HST filing deadlines, filing frequencies and GST/HST audit triggers explain the rules.
If a corporation doesn’t remit payroll source deductions or net GST/HST, its directors can be held personally liable for the unpaid amounts, plus penalties and interest. More in our article on directors’ liability for unpaid taxes.
The CRA’s Voluntary Disclosures Program (VDP) can reduce the cost of coming forward with unfiled returns or unreported income. Since October 1, 2025, an unprompted application (made before the CRA contacts you about the specific issue) normally gets 100% penalty relief and 75% interest relief; a prompted one normally gets up to 100% penalty relief and 25% interest relief. You still pay the tax, and anyone under audit for the same issue isn’t eligible.
Separately, taxpayer relief can cancel penalties and interest in circumstances beyond your control, such as serious illness, generally for the previous 10 calendar years. We prepare VDP applications in-house, and we’ll discuss whether either route fits before filing, because timing matters: VDP relief is best before the CRA contacts you. See our guide on back tax filing in Canada.
The books are rebuilt in order, but returns are filed in the order that limits your cost: anything under a CRA demand first, then years with tax owing (penalties grow monthly), then large GST/HST balances, then refund and nil years.
We publish our prices because “contact us for a quote” isn’t an answer when you’re already stressed about being behind. Corporate catch-up is priced per year, from $1,800 plus HST/GST, covering each year’s bookkeeping, GST/HST returns and T2 filing. If you’re more than a year behind, you get a fixed quote for the full period after a free review, before any work starts.

| Service | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Catch-up bookkeeping project | From $1,800 per year (fixed quote) | Rebuilding and reconciling missing periods, cleanup, year-end adjustments, reports, overdue GST/HST filing and the T2 for each year. Personal T1 returns quoted separately. |
| Growth plan, quarterly bookkeeping (after catch-up) | From $350/month | Quarterly bookkeeping and reports, GST/HST returns, T2 return, T4/T5 slips |
| Scale monthly plan (most popular) | From $500/month | Monthly bookkeeping and reports, GST/HST returns, T2 return, T4/T5 slips |
| Ultimate monthly plan | From $700/month | Monthly bookkeeping, AP/AR management, GST/HST, T2, T4/T5 and the director’s personal return |
Please note: all prices are in CAD and exclude HST/GST, which is added to our invoice. Our fees also don’t include any income tax, GST/HST, payroll deductions, penalties or interest your business owes the CRA; those are paid to the CRA directly.

If you have a written quote from another accounting firm for the same scope, show it to us before you sign our proposal and we’ll match it. Price matching has to be agreed before the proposal is signed; we can’t revisit the price afterwards. Same CPA review, whatever you pay.
We don’t bill catch-up work by the hour. Your fixed price covers the scope in your proposal, and it only changes if the scope does. If something turns up mid-project that wasn’t in it, such as an extra bank account nobody mentioned, another year of missing records or a CRA audit, we stop and tell you the cost before going further.
Catching up once is good. Not having to do it again is better. Most catch-up clients move straight onto one of our bookkeeping plans, which start from $350 a month (Growth, quarterly bookkeeping), $500 (Scale, monthly bookkeeping) or $700 (Ultimate) plus HST/GST. Every plan includes a basic QuickBooks Online subscription and Dext, GST/HST filing, your corporation’s T2 return and your T4/T5 slips, and every close is reviewed by a CPA.
Our monthly prices assume your books and filings are current when the plan starts. That’s exactly what the catch-up gives you: a reconciled, CPA-reviewed baseline, the same chart of accounts and bank rules, and a team that already knows your file.
Compare every line item on our pricing and packages page. If you have staff, payroll can be added to any plan, and when you need forward-looking numbers, our virtual CFO service picks up where the reports leave off.
We work with sole proprietors, partnerships and small corporations, mostly with $100,000 to $1 million in revenue. A few industries where catch-up work comes up often:
We’re based in Etobicoke, Ontario, with an office in Mississauga, and catch up books remotely for businesses across Toronto, the GTA and the rest of Canada except Quebec. See our service areas for province-specific details.
Local catch-up pages: Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Oakville.

Our team does the rebuild, and a CPA reviews the reconciliations, adjustments and returns for each year before anything is filed. It’s a habit from audit: the person who checks the work isn’t the person who did it. You can verify my CPA Ontario membership.
When the same team rebuilds the books and files the GST/HST, T2 and T1 returns, the numbers match and nothing falls between two firms. See how that worked for a client whose GST/HST and T2 we filed together.
Many catch-up clients fell behind because the one person they relied on disappeared. You get a dedicated bookkeeper backed by our team and a CPA reviewer, so your project doesn’t stall.

Wajahat Ajmal, CPA, FCCA, Founder, T-Ledgers Accounting. Verify my CPA Ontario membership.
I started in audit at KPMG and later worked as an independent contractor for a tax filing company, preparing returns and handling client questions. I hold an MSc in Professional Accountancy from University College London, I’m a CPA in Ontario and a Fellow of the ACCA, and I founded T-Ledgers in 2023 after taking on my own clients from 2020.
Catch-up work is close to the audit work I started with: take a set of records nobody has looked at properly, rebuild them so every balance can be proven, and explain what you found in plain language.

It’s the work of bringing a business’s books up to date after months or years with nothing recorded. We rebuild each missing period from your bank, credit card and processor statements, reconcile every account, and produce books for each year that your GST/HST and income tax returns can be filed from.
Corporate catch-up is priced per year, from $1,800 plus HST/GST, which covers each year’s bookkeeping, overdue GST/HST returns and T2 filing. Personal T1 returns are quoted separately. You get a fixed quote after a free review, before any work starts.
No. Our prices exclude HST/GST, which is added to our invoice, and they don’t include any tax, penalties or interest your business owes the CRA. Those are paid to the CRA directly. We estimate what you’re likely to owe as early as we can.
There’s no limit on how far behind you can be. All we need to start is your bank and credit card statements for the missing periods; we rebuild the books from those and fill in the detail from whatever other records you have.
Catch-up typically takes 2 to 4 weeks for up to a year behind, once we have your bank and credit card statements. Multi-year projects take longer. You get a timeline with your quote, and the most urgent periods are filed first.
That’s normal. Banks can provide past statements, and Stripe, Square, PayPal and Shopify keep their own reports. We rebuild from those records and tell you which larger expenses need a copy invoice or email confirmation.
Catch-up fills in periods where nothing was recorded. Cleanup fixes books that exist but are wrong, such as duplicates, unreconciled accounts or personal expenses coded to the business. Many projects need both, and we quote them together.
Yes. We rebuild the GST/HST you collected and the input tax credits you can claim for each period, then file the overdue returns from the reconciled numbers. Overdue GST/HST filing is included in the catch-up price. Input tax credits can generally be claimed up to four years later, so catching up can recover money too.
Yes. Once a year’s books are done, we can file the corporation’s T2, or your T1 with the T2125 if you’re a sole proprietor. The corporation’s T2 is included in the per-year catch-up price; a personal T1 is quoted separately and added to the same fixed proposal, so you see the full cost before you sign.
Filing stops late-filing penalties from growing. Where it fits, the CRA’s Voluntary Disclosures Program can cancel penalties and part of the interest, and taxpayer relief is another option in some cases. We prepare VDP applications in-house and will tell you honestly whether either route applies.
No. A letter or demand to file makes it more urgent, not hopeless. Send it to us on your first call. We’ll check the deadline, ask for more time where reasonable, file what the CRA is asking for first, and deal with the CRA as your representative.
No, but we recommend it so you don’t fall behind again. Plans start from $350 a month (Growth, quarterly bookkeeping), $500 (Scale, monthly bookkeeping) or $700 (Ultimate) plus HST/GST and include a basic QuickBooks Online subscription, Dext, GST/HST filing and your T2 return.
Yes, if you have a written quote from another accounting firm for the same scope and show it to us before you sign our proposal. Price matching has to be agreed before the proposal is signed; we can’t revisit the price afterwards.
Yes. We work remotely with businesses in every province and territory except Quebec, applying the right HST, GST or PST rules for each. You share documents through our secure portal and meet us by phone or video.
Whether you’re three months behind or three years, the first step is the same: a free 30-minute call. We’ll look at where things stand, tell you honestly what it will take, and send a fixed price, mostly within one business day. If you have a comparable written quote, show it to us before you sign and we’ll match it.
