Rules, rates and thresholds change. We confirm the current figure for your situation on the call before relying on it.
A registered charity and a non-profit organization (NPO) are taxed differently. Charities are registered with the CRA, can issue donation receipts and must meet ongoing rules. NPOs are generally exempt from income tax if they’re organized and operated exclusively for non-profit purposes and no income is available to members, but they can’t issue donation receipts.
Law: Income Tax Act s.149(1)(l) (non-profit organizations); Income Tax Act s.149.1 (registered charities and disbursement quota).
Every registered charity must file the T3010 Registered Charity Information Return within six months of its fiscal year-end. Late or missing returns can lead to revocation of charitable status.
A non-profit organization generally has to file the T1044 if it received more than $10,000 in taxable dividends, interest, rentals or royalties, had total assets over $200,000 at the end of the preceding fiscal period, or had to file one for a previous period. Incorporated NPOs generally also file a T2.
Law: Income Tax Act s.149(12) (NPO information return, T1044); Income Tax Act s.150(1)(a) (corporate return deadline).
Charities and qualifying non-profits can usually recover part of the GST/HST they pay through the public service bodies’ rebate: 50% of the federal part and, in Ontario, 82% of the provincial part. NPOs generally qualify only if at least 40% of their funding comes from government. Rebates can be claimed for up to four years back, so many organizations have money waiting.
Many charity supplies are exempt, and a charity is a small supplier if its gross revenue was $250,000 or less in either of its last two fiscal years, or its taxable supplies were $50,000 or less. Registered charities generally use a special net tax calculation.
Law: Excise Tax Act Schedule V, Part V.1 and Part VI (exempt supplies by charities and public sector bodies); Excise Tax Act s.148(1) (small supplier, $30,000); Excise Tax Act s.240(1) (registration).
Official donation receipts must include specific information, and records must support every receipt issued. Charities must meet a disbursement quota, currently 3.5% of property not used in charitable activities, and 5% on the portion over $1 million.
Law: Income Tax Act s.149.1 (registered charities and disbursement quota); Income Tax Act s.230(2) (charity records and receipts).
Ontario not-for-profit corporations are governed by the Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, 2010 (ONCA), which sets audit or review engagement thresholds. T-Ledgers doesn’t perform audits or review engagements itself, but we provide them through a partner firm and keep your books audit-ready. Restricted grants need to be tracked by fund.
Charities and non-profits with staff remit CPP, EI and income tax like any employer, and file T4s. Registered charities are generally exempt from Ontario Employer Health Tax on the first part of their payroll. We set up payroll so funders’ rules and CRA rules both line up.
Law: Income Tax Act s.153(1) (source deductions); Employer Health Tax Act s.2.1(2) ($1,000,000 exemption for 2020 to 2028).
Charities must keep records at an address in Canada, including duplicate donation receipts, for set periods. We keep your file organized so a CRA review, a funder audit or a board question is easy to answer.
Law: Income Tax Act s.230(2) (charity records and receipts); Income Tax Act s.230(1) and 230(4) (books and records, six years).
Prices are + HST/GST. Anything without a listed price is quoted after a free call, and you get the price in writing before any work starts.

I highly recommend T-Ledgers. Their communication is exceptional. You won’t have to wait days for a response. Waji really takes his time to explain things in-depth with his clients. He provides the ins and outs behind every major decision. Our corporation was 2 years behind on filings and Waji and his firm got all the work done in a timely manner, as promised.Posted on Google![]()

I highly recommend **T Ledger's Accounting**. He has gone above and beyond for me every single time I’ve needed his help. Even when something is urgent or needs to be handled last minute, he gets it done right away and makes sure everything is taken care of properly. He’s the type of accountant you can genuinely depend on. No matter what situation you’re dealing with, he takes the time to understand it, explains what needs to be done, and handles everything with a high level of professionalism. Reliable, knowledgeable, responsive, and always willing to help. It’s hard to find someone you can trust to handle important financial and accounting matters, and I’ve had nothing but a great experience with T Ledger's Accounting. **Beyond highly recommended. If you’re looking for an accountant you can rely on, this is the place to go.**Posted on Google![]()

I fully recommend Wajahat for one's tax filing needs. He will explain what he's doing and why, rather than just asking for documents and going silent, ensuring the customer is informed at every stage of the process. He is trustworthy and transparent when it comes to pricing and quality of the work for small business tax needs.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
