If a T1 or T2 is late and tax is owing, the CRA charges a late-filing penalty of 5% of the balance plus 1% for each full month late, up to 12 months. If the CRA sent a demand to file and you were also charged a late-filing penalty in any of the three previous years, the penalty doubles to 10% plus 2% a month, up to 20 months. A late GST/HST return with a balance owing costs 1% plus 0.25% a month, up to 12 months.
On top of penalties, interest compounds daily at the CRA prescribed rate for overdue amounts, which is 7% for October 1 to December 31, 2026. Use our CRA penalty & VDP calculator to estimate the cost, and read about voluntary disclosure if the CRA has not contacted you yet.
