HST from your first fare, vehicle expenses, CPP and your T2125, handled by a CPA-led accounting firm that knows how rideshare platforms pay you.
24/7 receptionist, a real person answers.
T-Ledgers is a CPA-led accounting firm working with Uber, Lyft and other rideshare drivers across Ontario, from full-time drivers to people who drive a few evenings a week. Wajahat Ajmal, CPA, FCCA, has been practising since 2020. We handle HST registration and returns, vehicle expense claims and your personal return with business income, and every return is reviewed by a CPA.
Rideshare is one of the few businesses where the HST rules kick in from your very first trip. Add a car used for both work and personal driving, and platform tax summaries that don’t match your bank deposits, and it’s easy to file something the CRA questions later.
Rules, rates and thresholds change. We confirm the current figure for your situation on the call before relying on it.
Ridesharing counts as a “taxi business” for GST/HST. That means the usual $30,000 small supplier exemption doesn’t apply to passenger trips: you need a GST/HST number before you start driving passengers, and you file HST returns on your fares. Food and parcel delivery is treated differently, and the small supplier rule can still apply to delivery-only income. We sort out which of your income falls under which rule.
Law: Excise Tax Act s.240(1) and 240(1.1) (registration; taxi businesses must register); Excise Tax Act s.123(1) (definition of “taxi business”); Excise Tax Act s.148(1) (small supplier, $30,000).
Platforms send an annual tax summary showing gross fares, service fees, tolls and HST. Your bank deposits are the net amount, so booking deposits as income understates both your revenue and your deductible fees. We reconcile the summary to your deposits and record the gross fares and each fee separately.
Law: Income Tax Act s.9(1) (business income); Income Tax Act s.282 to 288 (digital platform reporting).
You can deduct the business share of fuel, insurance, maintenance, licence and registration, lease payments or capital cost allowance, and interest on a car loan. The business share is based on kilometres driven for business compared with total kilometres, so a logbook (or app records that show your trip and online kilometres) matters. Passenger vehicles have cost, lease and interest limits that the CRA updates from time to time; we link to the current figures rather than hard-code them.
Law: Income Tax Act s.18(1)(a) and 18(1)(h) (expenses must be for earning income; personal costs not deductible); Income Tax Act s.248(1) (“automobile”, “passenger vehicle”); Income Tax Act s.13(7)(g) (cost limit for passenger vehicles); Income Tax Act s.67.2 (interest limit on passenger vehicle loans); Income Tax Act s.67.3 (lease cost limit on passenger vehicles); Income Tax Regulations s.1100(1) and Schedule II (CCA classes).
Because you’re HST-registered, you can claim input tax credits on the business share of HST you pay on fuel, repairs, the vehicle itself and your phone plan. Some drivers use the Quick Method instead. We compare both before your first return so you pick the one that leaves more in your pocket.
Law: Excise Tax Act s.169(1) (input tax credits); Streamlined Accounting (GST/HST) Regulations s.16(1) ($400,000 Quick Method limit).
As a self-employed driver you pay both the employee and employer share of CPP on your net earnings, on top of income tax. Nothing is withheld from your payouts, so many drivers get a large bill in April. If your net tax owing goes over the instalment threshold, the CRA will also expect quarterly instalments. We estimate the number during the year so it isn’t a surprise.
Law: Canada Pension Plan Act s.10 (contributions on self-employed earnings); Income Tax Act s.156(1) (quarterly instalments for individuals); Income Tax Act s.156.1(1) (instalment threshold).
Many drivers find out about HST registration only after they’ve been driving for a while. We can register you, rebuild your fares and expenses from platform summaries and bank records, and file what’s overdue in the right order. If penalties and interest have built up, we look at whether a relief request makes sense.
Law: Income Tax Act s.230(1) and 230(4) (books and records, six years); Excise Tax Act s.286(1) and 286(3) (records, six years).

I fully recommend Wajahat for one's tax filing needs. He will explain what he's doing and why, rather than just asking for documents and going silent, ensuring the customer is informed at every stage of the process. He is trustworthy and transparent when it comes to pricing and quality of the work for small business tax needs.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. For rideshare passenger trips, yes. The GST/HST rules treat ridesharing as a taxi business, and taxi businesses must register even if they’re small suppliers.
Delivery-only income isn’t a taxi business, so the $30,000 small supplier threshold can apply. If you also drive passengers, the passenger trips still need HST registration.
Sometimes. It can be simpler and, for some drivers, cheaper. We compare it with regular input tax credits before you elect.
The business share of fuel, insurance, repairs, licence and registration, lease payments or CCA, and loan interest, plus items like your phone plan, car washes and the platform’s fees.
You need a reasonable record of business and total kilometres. App trip records help, but they usually don’t capture the kilometres driven between trips, so we help you keep a simple log.
No. Lease payments, interest and CCA are deductible only for the business share, and passenger vehicles have dollar limits the CRA sets.
Nothing is withheld from your payouts, and you pay both shares of CPP on your net earnings. We estimate your bill during the year so you can set money aside.
If your net tax owing is over the CRA’s threshold this year and in either of the two previous years, the CRA will generally send instalment reminders.
Platforms may report seller earnings to the CRA under the digital platform reporting rules, so your return should match your tax summary.
We register you, work out the HST on past fares from your summaries, and file the overdue returns. Where it fits, we look at relief options before anything is filed.
For most drivers, no. Incorporation usually makes sense only at higher, steady profits. We run the numbers on the call.
Yes, the business share of your phone plan and the phone itself, if you use it for driving.
