Hi, I'm Wajahat Ajmal, CPA, FCCA, and the founder of T-Ledgers Accounting.

I started my career as an audit associate at KPMG in Qatar. Auditing teaches you to look at a set of books and ask whether they actually tell the truth. I spent my days testing financial statements, working through aging reports for debtors and creditors, and checking that companies were following the rules. That habit of asking "does this really add up?" has stayed with me ever since.

From there I moved into hands-on accounting and tax work. Before founding T-Ledgers, I worked as an independent contractor for a tax filing company, preparing returns and handling the day-to-day questions clients brought to it.

Along the way I earned a BSc in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University and an MSc in Professional Accountancy from University College London, and I became a CPA in Canada.

Over more than eight years, across North America, the Middle East, Asia and Europe, I kept running into the same kind of problem. Some of the most useful work I did wasn't keeping clean books clean. It was cleaning up books that had fallen behind. Sometimes that meant reconciling a huge receivables balance and chasing what was owed. Other times it meant fixing processes so invoices went out correctly and customers paid in months instead of most of a year. Messy books are fixable. They just need someone patient enough to go back and do it properly.

When I looked at the accounting services available to small businesses and individuals in Canada, I noticed a gap. Most firms are set up to handle the current year. If you come to them with two or three years of unfiled returns, a shoebox of receipts, or a bookkeeping file nobody has touched in ages, it's often treated as an inconvenience rather than the main job. Catch-up work gets pushed to the bottom of the pile.

That's the work I wanted to put at the centre. I started taking on my own clients as a sole practitioner in 2020, and the catch-up files were the ones I found myself most drawn to. In 2023 I founded T-Ledgers to make that work the heart of a firm: helping people get their books back on track, get caught up with the CRA, and then stay current without the stress building up again.

We're based in Etobicoke and work remotely with clients across Canada, except Quebec. Our pricing is flat-rate, so you know what you're paying before we start. Every file is led by a CPA, and I bring the same approach I learned in audit: go back to the source, reconcile everything, and make sure the numbers make sense before anything gets filed.

I also have a soft spot for good systems. In almost every role I've held, I've built SOPs, automated repetitive tasks and helped move teams onto better software. That carries into T-Ledgers too, because once your books are fixed, the right setup is what keeps them that way.
